Futuristic illustration of AI merged with gold rush imagery

Venture capital might be the best investment opportunity right now in the AI world.

And startup companies that are innovating ways to use AI most effectively and efficiently might hold the greatest potential for outsized returns.

While OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI dominated venture funding over the first three months of 2026, accounting for nearly 65% of investment in the quarter, the opportunity set is broader and deeper than simply these few companies. Here are a few areas to consider:

  • Agentic AI—autonomous systems that, unlike reactive chatbots, proactively plan, reason and act to achieve complex goals with minimal human intervention—are causing a massive rethinking of installed systems and legacy software. Software is shifting from tools that facilitate specific job functions to platforms that address entire end-to-end workflows. Pricing appears to be moving toward outcomes-based business models rather than service based. This has raised significant questions around traditional software enterprises, challenging businesses to rethink their competitive positioning and fundamentally testing existing business models.
  • Infrastructure: The power demands of AI data centers are straining the electric grid and pushing up consumer costs for electricity. Many data-center developers are exploring options for on-site power, microgrids and other “behind-the-meter” energy solutions. Power management innovations, often deploying agentic AI, are a potential answer.
  • Physical AI combines AI with sophisticated sensors and physical systems in the form of robotics, drones, and machinery. Other applications range from manufacturing to logistics, agriculture to defense, and many other industries, making physical AI one of the most diverse and far-reaching segments of the venture landscape.
  • AI beneficiaries: Numerous industries are leveraging AI to become leaner and more efficient. AI can also become an engine helping essential industries develop at scales previously unattainable. These include biology, healthcare, critical materials and energy. Even space exploration is benefiting, as AI-driven advancements push the boundaries of what human ingenuity can achieve.

The AI revolution is not a single event but a cascading series of transformations creating new winners, displacing incumbents, and opening investment themes that did not exist a decade ago. Companies being built today could ultimately define the next generation of technological infrastructure.
